The History of the Residential Building and the “Melodiya” Music Store

In the 1960s, the residents of this building took the initiative to improve the building and its surrounding area. They cleaned and landscaped the courtyard themselves, took part in renovating the building, and worked together to create a more comfortable environment for the residents. The community club operating in the building became an important center of neighborhood life. It hosted sewing and handicraft groups, a reading room, a recreation room, and a separate room for pensioners. Residents also organized meetings, discussions, and lectures on various topics. This community-led initiative later became an example for other settlements across Armenia. Years later, the same premises housed the “Melodiya” music store. The store sold musical instruments and recordings, while customers could listen to their preferred music in advance using headphones. Later, “Melodiya” was transformed into a café-store, but it ceased operations in the 1990s. The history of this place remains part of Vanadzor’s community life and everyday heritage, reflecting a period when residents’ self-organization and mutual support played an important role in the development of local neighborhoods.
